My task was to try and break all the things down and reconstruct them subtly until they felt like mine. \r\n\r\nOverall I stuck pretty close to the originals' structures while figuring out new ways to express or reference the unique and beloved ELO string arrangements. An orchestra would have been difficult or impossible for me to manage to record, nor did I think there was any point in trying to copy those parts as they originally were. Why not try to reimagine them within my zone of limitations? In some cases I transposed string parts onto guitars, or keyboards, and I even sung some of them (as in \"Showdown\" and \"Bluebird Is Dead\").\r\n\r\nRecording the album was a kind of complicated and drawn-out process since I was doing all of my tracks at home in my bedroom (drums and bass were done by Chris Anzalone and Ed Valauskas, respectively [in their own recording spaces]), and I kept running into technology problems that would frustrate me and slow me up. But eventually I got it all done. I was thinking about fate and circumstance and about how I'd ended up where I was (\"Where Are You Now\"). \n\nHowever much or hard I try, it seems, I've never had much control over much in my life. \n\nI should say here that my mother's younger brother was struck and killed by lighting at the age of 16 and when I asked her how this affected her worldview, she told me that it made her believe that there is a predetermined plan for each of us.\n\nWith this album I was contemplating these ideas-fate, powerlessness (\"Popsicle\"), the effects of trauma (\"Wouldn't Change Anything,\" \"Fall Apart\",\" Strong Too Long\"), the ways we can't and don't change.\n\nI hold on to humility and gratitude (most of the time) rather than (constant) bitterness, and I have hope, mostly in the form of the music that I make, even if it's subject matter is sometimes kind of grim. This practice of putting songs together has always sustained me and given my life-as uncontrollable as it feels- meaning and purpose, even in the darkest times. \"Lighting Might Strike\" is largely about that; the music itself is pulling me out of a big hole (\"All I've Got\") in real time, in the time it took me to make the album.\n\nChris Anzalone played and recorded all the drums from Arlington, Massachusetts. Ed Valauskas played and recorded most of the bass from Cambridge, MA. I did the bass on a few songs, plus all the guitars, keyboards, vocals, and percussion, in my house (\"My House Is Not My Dream House\") in western MA. The talented Pat DiCenso then mixed and mastered it all. They are a nice counterpoint to the damaged lyrical content.\"The album was recorded largely at home-Juliana's home in Massachusetts and new collaborator Jed Davis' home in Connecticut. \"During self-isolation I took the opportunity to finally learn how to record into my laptop,\" says Juliana, \"and that's how this album came to be.
