First issued as a 'private' LP set by the orchestra in 1986, this CD reissue makes a significant contribution to the symphony's extensive discography.\r\n\r\n- Gustav Mahler's (1860-1911) Second Symphony, often referred to as the \"Resurrection Symphony,\" was composed between 1888 and 1894, marking a significant progression in Mahler's artistic development. After the Second World War, he studied at the Milan Conservatory, then at the Tel Aviv Academy of Music (where he graduated in 1951), and finally at the Paris Conservatory and the ecole Normale de Musique. He founded and directed first the Rinat Choir - later named the Israel Chamber Choir - and then the Israel Chamber Ensemble with which Bertini made numerous appearances in Europe and the USA. Over the years, he has been principal conductor of the Frankfurt Opera and the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra, artistic director of the New Israel Opera, and music director of the Rome Opera and the Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra. Sadness and joy, darkness and light are all part of the charm of Gustav Mahler's complex and multi-layered Seventh Symphony. Composed in the idyllic natural setting of Lake Worthersee, it is one of his great, yet somewhat enigmatic works, and it's interplay of emotional extremes has always challenged performers. After the consistently tragic Sixth Symphony, the Seventh counters the gloomy mood with a life-affirming note. Mahler skilfully incorporates natural sounds, cowbells and horn calls. \"Here, nature roars, \" he commented. The unusual number of five movements allows him to create a symmetrical structure: The large-scale first movement, marked by march rhythms and ending triumphantly, has it's counterpart in a cheerful, bright rondo finale. The second and fourth movements are Nachtmusiken, framing a Scherzo. The world premiere of the Seventh Symphony took place a full three years after it's completion, on September 19, 1908 at the Concert Hall of the Jubilee Exhibition in Prague, as part of the programme of the tenth Philharmonic Concert to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Emperor Franz Joseph I. Mahler, plagued by doubts about the symphony, worked on it's orchestration until shortly before the performance. The premiere was a great success, somewhat in contrast to the first performance of the symphony in Vienna shortly afterwards. Schoenberg composed the work in 1899; whilst on holiday with his friend and fellow composer Alexander Zemlinsky and Zemlinsky's sister; Mathilde; whom Schoenberg would marry two years later. Zemlinsky's Maiblumen blühten überall; for soprano and string sextet; was never completed; intended originally to be a much larger work. Webern studied composition with both Zemlinsky and Schoenberg.
