When it came time to master the album on vinyl in 2010, Andy Partridge - still never entirely happy with the overall sound of the finished album - took it to award-winning mastering engineer John Dent, who noticed something that had never previously been spotted. Somewhere, possibly in the transfer from the multi-channel tape to the stereo master, a polarity had been reversed. This is not the same thing as a reversed left\/right channel which puts a stereo picture out of phase and makes the sound unlistenable, but a much more difficult to pin down event that can be triggered by something as simple as a badly wired plug in the overall system which, nonetheless, removes some of the punch and presence from a finished recording. With the polarity corrected, the album - complete with original artwork and \"Dear God\" - was issued on vinyl as a double LP deluxe edition playing at 45rpm in the original rejected sleeve, then later reissued with the more familiar sleeve... Leaving some fans to wonder why they couldn't have the 15 song LP on single vinyl playing at 33 \u0026amp; 1\/3 RPM. XTC's seventh album, The Big Express was virtually ignored on release, much as it's immediate predecessor Mummer had been. If Mummer was XTC's quiet album, this was it's polar opposite: bright, brash, noisy - even cluttered on occasion if the song demanded it - as it became a concept album of sorts, a partly autobiographical reflection on growing up in an industrial town, Swindon, with it's history of engineering and railway accomplishments. Perhaps in keeping with that tradition of technical innovation, the album also made extensive use of (at the time) new technology with Linn-Drum programming (alongside drummer Peter Phipps), E-mu Emulator and other synths claiming space among the more traditional guitars, bass and drums mix under-pinning the vocals. This technology was juxtaposed with technology of a slightly earlier pop\/rock era as phasing, backwards tapes and the inclusion of a mellotron hinted at a psychedelic influence that would move more center stage with the band's next project - The Dukes of Stratosphear. With XTC no longer touring, the sound radically different to any previous XTC album, in a musical climate where the upper end of the charts reflected national radio, producing the most mainstream result for years: Lionel Richie, Sade, Spandau Ballet, Howard Jones, Tina Turner, Queen - Frank Sinatra's final solo studio album... The space for a metallic, post-punk concept album about growing up amidst the ghosts of Swindon's industrial heritage proved non-existent. Of course the songs were as good as on any other XTC album - a very high standard indeed - but they went largely unheard. Given that position, it would be easy to conclude that the timing was wrong for the album. But the best musicians follow the music and allow the times to catch up with that; precisely what happened when XTC released it's next album Skylarking in 1986. Preceded by a set of live demos at Phonogram studios, XTC knew exactly what it wanted from a fourth album - even down to the original album title: Work Under Pressure (which helps make more sense of the sleeve photo), prior to setting foot in The Townhouse for the main recordings. The switch to Black Sea was made only to allay the then band manager's sensitivity to the title being interpreted as a criticism of his management style. More power rock than power pop, when released in Sept. 1980, the album became XTC's first Top 20 chart album in the UK, narrowly missed the Top 40 (#41) in the USA where it was issued in November, but spent an impressive 24 weeks on the Billboard chart nonetheless. 'Generals And Majors' and 'Towers Of London' provided twin back to back Top 40 UK singles released either side of the album in a tight eight weeks' release space in September and October, while 'Sgt. Rock' propelled the band back into the UK top 20 in January 1981. It was a top 30 album in the UK (#28) and Top 100 album in the USA (#97), where it also made it to #1 in the, then significant, College album chart. It was also Grammy nominated in the 'Alternative albums' category in 1992. The album was recorded at Chipping Norton studios in 1991 and initially produced by Gus Dudgeon - best known for his work with Elton John - when the team of Steve Lillywhite and Hugh Padgham proved unavailable. Disappointed with the final mixes, the band moved to Rockfield Studios where the album was successfully completed by Nick Davis. Following the slow burn success of the 1986 album Skylarking, 1989's Oranges \u0026amp; Lemons had proved successful in the UK and US charts, so there was a general expectation that Nonsuch would take the band to the next level of mainstream success, especially when early critical response proved encouraging. Following seven years of enforced silence due to contractual disputes with Virgin Records, XTC returned in 1999 with it's own label (Idea) and an album which many fans consider to be the band's finest recording: Apple Venus Volume I. A stunning selection of songs, mostly acoustic and enhanced by subtle orchestral arrangements, it was in some ways different to what anyone might have expected from the band yet, in hindsight, the logical progression and culmination of musical ideas signposted via songs such as 'Chalkhills \u0026amp; Children' and 'Wrapped in Grey'. A Top 20 album in Japan, the album also charted in the UK and USA though the seven years absence had eroded some of the commercial momentum the band had enjoyed - especially in the USA - with the run of albums from Skylarking to Nonsuch. Issued at the start of September, Drums and Wires entered the UK Albums Chart where it remained for a total of seven weeks, accompanied by another first for the band, a Top 20 UK (\u0026amp; international) hit single in album lead track \"Making Plans for Nigel\". The optimism of the recording sessions had proved justified. Joining the new Dolby Atmos mix is all of the audio material first presented on the (now long-unavailable) 2014 edition when Steven Wilson remixed the album in new stereo and 5.1 editions alongside a number of additional tracks all presented on Blu-ray here with minor revisions \u0026amp; a set of stereo instrumentals of the album. The original album mix is also included in High-Resolution stereo. The Blu-Ray edition also includes the DJM mixes - songs earmarked as potential single releases \u0026amp; a number of full demo sessions tracking the complete evolution of the album - a virtual boxed set on a single Blu-Ray disc.
