Boccherini / La Ritirata / Obregon- Cello in Spain (CD)
Cellist Josetxu Obregón and La Ritirata bring us up close to this noble instrument's role during the 18th c. with The Cello in Spain, their new Glossa CD.The selections made by the cellist, many recorded here for the first time, would have undoubtedly been heard in Spain during the infancy of the instrument and later, played by traveling virtuosi such as Luigi Boccherini or Domingo Porretti.Obregón's vivid advocacy also reaches through to the first native Spanish cello school with music from Pablo Vidal and José Zayas. This new disc may pave the way for a broader exploration of the cello in Spain.
