Charlie Singleton- French Sweet Song / Pyramid (Digital 45)
A rare slice of exotica from Tommy Robinson's Harlem, NY based Atlas Records label, tenor saxophonist Charlie Singleton's ultra rare 1957 single, "French Sweet Song" b/w "Pyramid," marked a departure from the jump blues and jazz of his previous releases. His stab at the exotica sounds that were quite popular at the time, worked quite effectively with a swelling vocal chorus and flute floating above a Latin tinged rhythm section. Although details are scant, it's almost undoubtedly Singleton on flute - and judging from the writer's credit on the dreamy "Pyramid," it's probably the fine bop pianist Gildo Mahones on keys. Finally made available in the digital domain, this ultra-rare single is presented here newly remastered for this exclusive release.
