For Kacy Lee Anderson, not giving a fuck's a good look, and if the glitter is gone, then you might as well wear it yourself. The Sasketchawan-bred singer's been around the block for long enough, and made enough records - mostly with her cousin Clayton Linthicum in their duo, Kacy & Clayton - to know both the bright and the ugly sides of the music industry all too well. Now 29, she's witnessed it change plenty since making her earliest recordings as a teenager. She sees the industry with a vantage denied to the latest crop of young musicians who've never known a world without streaming and short-form video; all they've known is desperately vying for virality, putting the utmost importance on even the most short-lived social media hegemony. But that's just not Anderson's style: she's making music because she's always loved it, and she's writing the songs she wants to hear, whether anyone else cares or not. With her new album, Hello, I'm Irrelevant, she seems to be winkingly encouraging us all to follow her lead: work fast and move on, and don't bother looking over your shoulder. "I mean, the whole time I just said to everyone, 'I don't care if anyone likes this at all,'" the singer says. "I didn't tell any single person I was doing it. So that made it feel just like I could do whatever I wanted, and I wasn't thinking about how it would be received, or even thinking I would put it out. So having that mindset was pretty nice. "RIYL: Patsy Cline, Emmylou Harris, Dolly Parton, Lucinda Williams
