Mikhail Kollontay graduated from the Moscow Conservatory in 1971 with a double major in piano and theory/composition. Between 1979 and 2003 he returned to his alma mater as professor, and from 1989 to 1991 he served at the Gnessin Musical Pedagogical Institute.
