T.C. Boyle's fiction is known for its unsettling balance of pessimism and humor. In this profile, Boyle takes us through his native upstate New York to the very sites that are the settings for much of his work, including his epic saga of the Hudson River Valley, World's End.
Originally from Peekskill, New York, Boyle grew up in an alcoholic family, and was placed in a slow learner's class in second and third grades, where he made friends with a group of exciteable "bad boys" who are still his friends today. At the State University of New York at Potsdam, he skidded through with a low C average, then became a high school English teacher to avoid the Vietnam draft, during which time he became a "dilettante of heroin."
With the publishing of his story "The OD and Hepatitis Railroad or Bust," he accepted writing as a vocation. In 1972, he was accepted by the prestigious Iowa Writer's Workshop, and in 1988, World's End won the PEN/ Faulkner award for American Fiction. He is the author of seven novels and short story collections.
