The Mello-Kings were an American doo-wop group, formed in Mount Vernon, NY in 1956 who became popular in the late 1950s with their song, "Tonite, Tonite."The group consisted of brothers Jerry and Bob Scholl, Eddie Quinn, Neil Arena and Larry Esposito. Originally named the Mellotones, the group was signed to the Herald label. "Tonite, Tonite" was written by Billy Myles, a staff composer for the label. The group was forced to change it's name after the single's release, as another group had already claimed Mellotones."Tonite, Tonite" lasted more than ten weeks on the US pop charts. By the time the band recorded the 1962 single "Walk Softly" b/w "But You Lied," they were down to a trio consisting of original member Jerry Scholl and later additions Louis Jannacone and Tony Pinto. The "A" side of the single, "Walk Softly" features an impressive vocal arrangement that truly shows off the strength of the group dynamic. The flip side, "But You Lied," is a catchy tune that rocks along nicely with a steady beat and some nifty vocal flourishes. Originally released in 1962 on the Lescay label, this rare single is presented here newly remastered.
