the album cover for Ussr Symphony Orchestra / Kirill Kondrashin - Myaskovksy: Symphony 6 / Slavonic Rhapsody

Probably the most significant Russian symphony between Tchaikovsky's Pathétique (1893) and the Fourth Symphony of Shostakovich (premiered 1961), this was to be hailed as the first Soviet Symphony, partly because of the use of French Revolutionary songs in the finale. This is a splendidly fiery, memorable and ultimately moving work which deserves a big-occasion performance and this performance is by far the best yet to be recorded
